FAIRISLE SWEATER
These were knitted here in the U.K. for Rocket Originals. We have taken great care to make our sweaters as authentic as possible and this design is from an original 1940's knitting pattern.
This sweater has blue as the main colour with a maroon, grey and white fairisle pattern.
It has a square neck, and slightly puffed sleeves and a 3" thick rib at the bottom.
These were knitted on an industrial knitting machine and there is a reinforced band along the shoulder seam to ensure the shape stays put as well as extra elastane in the rib at the bottom. The yarn is 100% acrylic so it can be machine washed, it will keep its shape and won’t shrink. We've had washing instructions sewn inside just in case you're unsure. Obviously, if you prefer the old method of hand washing in soap suds etc then that's o.k. too!
As with all our sweaters these are "limited editions" as we only have a limited amount knitted in any one style and colour. We've had these knitted in bust size 32" through to 40".

A brief history of the Fair Isle
:
Fairisle
(some string the words together) is a traditional knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colours, having bands of a repeated pattern worked in several colours against a plain background. It is named after Fair Isle a tiny island in the north of Scotland, between the Orkney and Shetland islands.
Fairisle knitting gained a considerable popularity when the Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VIII) wore a fairisle "tank top" (also known as sleeveless sweater or pullover) in public in 1921. It was also very popular in knitwear in the 1940’s and 50’s, particularly because this sort of pattern enables you to use up small amounts of wool within the pattern.
